Daniel Stone and Ella Crouse

This photograph was in a box of stuff I bought on The Avenue in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore. The box contains dozens of photographs centered around the Upton, Griffith, Hahn, and Pumphrey families in Baltimore City and Anne Arundel County, MD.

Pictured are Daniel Stone and his second wife, Ella. This matches genealogical records for Daniel Louis Stone (1852-1918) whose second wife was Ella Crouse (1863-?). They were married circa 1883 after the death of Daniel’s first wife Elizabeth (1849-1881).

According to the U.S. Census, in 1910 four of Ella’s six children were living. Ella’s widowed father, Frederick Crouse (1824) was living with the family as was Daniel’s 13-year-old niece, Lizzie L. Pumphrey.

Ella lived on Light Street in Baltimore as late as 1928, listed as Daniel L. Stone’s widow.

Daniel, Elizabeth, and Ella are listed on a gravestone in Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church in Millersville, Anne Arundel County, MD. Daniel’s findagrave.com memorial is #64696232.

John Barton Montgomery, Sr.

I think the above young gentleman is John Barton Montgomery Sr. who was born in KY in May 1887 and died in IN on 8 March 1951. He was variously known as John, Bart, and a combination of these two. He had a son whose name was John Barton Montgomery Jr. (1926-2009) according to what is written on his tombstone.

“Bart” married Heathy E. Mitchell in September 1916, and they had four sons and two daughters.

***Update on 28 March 2016*** Today I heard from some of John’s grandchildren who live in Georgia and I mailed them the photograph this afternoon.

Bonita Margaret McGuire Ali

Bonita Margaret McGuire (1915-1989) was a nurse in the U.S. Army from November, 1942 to February, 1946. In 1945 Bonita married Chester F. Ali (1919-2009) who was born in Italy. He was also in the U.S. Army from August 1941 to May 1946 and resigned as a major in the Medical Administrative Corps. They were both from West Virginia and settled in the Clarksburg area. They had at least two children.

Bonita signed the following photograph: “To the sweetest Lt. I ever knew, Bonita McGuire.”

The photograph of Bonita was one of several torn from an album which probably belonged to the unidentified lieutenant mentioned above, who was probably the subject of the two following photographs taken at Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, TN.

A Bunch From Westminster, MD

I paid $5 for this batch of photographs at Strawberry Fields off The Avenue in Hampden, Baltimore. They were in a box of photos which apparently came from an estate sale in Westminster, MD.

Here are three photographs of Gary Lee Noel. The third one has no identifying information but the subject is recognizable as GLN as identified in the other two photographs.

The following is a photograph of members of Miss Hooper’s 4th grade class and their Frontier Exhibit: Skipper Myers, Buddy Long, Donna Bole, Maxine Magee, Carole Bollinger, Sally Mather, Charles Beard, and Fred Magsmen.

Finally, here are three ladies at “camp” in July, 1932: Louella Downey, Miriam Waldemeyer, and “Peggy” Beard.

G. W. Sheridan

There are too many G. W. Sheridan’s in Baltimore circa 1889. The date is a reference because I know that J.D. Ernsberger’s business was active at this address in 1889.

One of them is George Washington Sheridan who was a “preacher of the gospel” and is buried a couple of blocks from me in St. Mary’s Episcopal Cemetery along side his wife, Rose.

I paid $3 for this at Sturgis Antiques on The Avenue in Baltimore.

I bought this photograph for $1 at Strawberry Fields in Baltimore, just off The Avenue. It came from a box of photographs from a family centered around Hanover, PA.

Walter (1889-1968) and Maria Grace (1891-1932) were brother and sister. Walter died in MI. Grace married Grover Cleveland Sell and died in Hammond, IN.

Relda H. Wine (1892-1980) married a man named Stough and had at least two children, Richard W. and William Glenn.

William H. Bowerman, Artist

I purchased this for $3.00 at Sturgis Antiques in October 2015.

On the front it says, “Bowerman, Wm H” in a place where the photographer’s name would be. On the back it says, “Wm H Bowerman, Artist, 605 E. Baltimore Street, Balto, MD.”

This is tricky: Is it a photograph made by Bowerman the photographer, or a photograph of Bowerman the photographer? Could it be both?

There was a photographer named William H. Bowerman in Baltimore. He lived in the Waverly neighborhood in 1880 and had a shop at 605 E. Baltimore Street in 1889-1891.

I purchased this photo of Anne Rebecca Brown at Sturgis Antiques on The Avenue in Baltimore, MD in October 2015 for $3.00.

She was born in about 1867 in Maryland to John J. Brown (1826-1912) and Margaret (1831-?).

She married John Franklin Bowles (1865-?) and they had at least one child, Harry Frankln Bowles (1904-1977).

This is a photograph of Nellie E. Rupley who was born 20 September 1865 in IL. She died on 22 September 1977 in Hanover, York County, PA.

She married Ralph H. Bergstresser and they lived in PA. They had at least 11 children.

I bought this photo at an antique store in Baltimore, MD.
