The two photographs below depict Percy Matthews Nock (1892-1973) and his wife Mary Elizabeth Tyndall (1892-1976). Both were born in Accomack County, VA, specifically in the town of Temperanceville, a 1922 history of which you can read here. They did not have children.

Percy is dressed in his U.S. Army uniform which dates the photo to the latter part of his service during WWI, September 1917 to March 1919. It appears he was posted at Camp Lee, VA for most of that time. According to Lest We Forget, Base Hospital, Camp Lee, Virginia, 1919, the post office at Camp Lee was “in charge of Percie Nock.”

Percy was the son of William Littleton Nock (1853-1922) and Blanche Matthews (1858-1918). Percy’s obituary in The Daily Times (Salisbury, MD) says he was a “retired insurance agent”. He started at Poughkeepsie Business College in 1911 but there is no further information about his education. For most of his professional life he was a bank cashier, first at his father’s Temperanceville Bank which was opened in 1905 and continued as a private bank until 1925, then at Continental Bank. His brother, Howard Littleton Nock (1885-1945) was head cashier at the family bank.

Mary was the daughter of James William Tyndall (1867-1953) and Margaret Elizabeth Dennis (1867-1938). Her obituary documents that she, like Percy, was a member of the Temperanceville United Methodist Church, as well as the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 88, and the Accomack County Women’s Club. Percy named a motorboat after her, the “Mary E.” which he entered in a race as part of the annual “Pony Penning” held on 30 July 1925.

I purchased these photographs at an antique store along Highway 13 on the Virginia Eastern Shore. Each photo is approximately 8.25 X 6.25 inches and pasted on a paper backing measuring approximately 9.75 X 11.75 inches (too big for my scanner).
